Adderall pills, which are prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, are found in a variety of shapes, colors, and dosage sizes.

Like all stimulants and stimulant medications, Adderall, which is the brand name for dextroamphetamine-amphetamine, causes an increase in energy, focus, and alertness.

Adderall works by increasing levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the central nervous system, helping a person to stay awake and enhance their concentration.

Misusing Adderall comes with risks, and the medication should never be taken without a prescription from a healthcare provider.

Types Of Adderall Pills

Adderall pills come in two forms: immediate-release and extended-release, both of which contain amphetamine salts.

Immediate-Release Adderall Tablets

Immediate-release Adderall pills come in tablet form and their effects can generally be felt for between four and six hours.

Extended-Release Adderall Pills

Adderall XR pills are the extended-release version, designed to provide a slow and sustained release of the medication that can last up to 12 hours.

This type of Adderall comes in capsule form, which is usually transparent on one side. Small pellets or beads can be seen through the side, which is clear.

Identifying Adderall Tablets By Dosage

Both immediate-release and extended-release versions of Adderall are available in dosage sizes ranging from 5 mg to 30 mg.

All immediate-release Adderall tablets, with the exception of the 5 mg pill, are indented on one side so that they can easily be broken in half.

5 Mg Adderall

The 5 mg Adderall pill is circular and white or off-white in color. “AD” is printed on one side of the pill, while “5” is printed on the other side. This is the smallest dosage of Adderall available.

7.5 Mg Adderall

The 7.5 mg Adderall pill is oval-shaped and blue in color. “AD” is printed on one side of the pill and “7.5” is printed on the other side.

10 Mg Adderall

The 10 mg Adderall pill is circular and blue in color. “AD” is printed on one side of the pill, while “10” is printed on the other side.

12.5 Mg Adderall

The 12.5 mg Adderall pill is circular and orange or peach in color. One side of the pill is printed with “AD”, and the other side is printed with “12.5”.

15 Mg Adderall

Adderall pills that are 15 mg are oval in shape and light orange or pink in color. One side of the pill is printed with “AD” and the other side is printed with “15”.

20 mg Adderall

The 20 mg Adderall pill is circular in shape and the same light orange or pink color that the 15 mg pill is, with “AD” printed on one side and “20” on the other side.

30 Mg Adderall

A 30 mg Adderall pill looks very similar to a 20 mg pill, but with “30” printed on one side instead of “20”. This is the strongest type of Adderall pill and the most sought-after.

How To Spot Fake Adderall Pills

It is important to be able to tell the difference between real and counterfeit Adderall pills, as fake pills can contain unknown dosages or different ingredients that may be harmful or dangerous.

The easiest way to spot fake Adderall pills is that they generally contain no markings on either side. The containers that they come in may also contain misspelled labels or text.

Common Side Effects Of Adderall Abuse

The use of Adderall can result in a variety of negative side effects, especially when misused and abused at high doses or frequencies.

Side effects of Adderall abuse can include:

  • dry mouth
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • high blood pressure
  • increase in heart rate
  • nausea
  • paranoia
  • constipation
  • twitching
  • mental health disorders like anxiety and depression

It is also important to know that extended and heavy abuse of Adderall can increase a person’s risk for psychosis, heart attack (or other heart problems), stroke, or sudden death.

Treatment Options For Adderall Addiction

While Adderall withdrawal is not potentially lethal in the way that withdrawal from other prescription drugs can be, such as with opioids, it can still be very uncomfortable.

Professional treatment programs for substance use can instead allow a person to go through detox in a safe and comfortable environment, while also lowering their chances of relapse.

Some treatment options for Adderall abuse include outpatient programs, inpatient drug rehab, behavioral therapy, and more.
