Professions that serve the public through protection and emergency response, such as military members, police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, tend to attract brave, resilient people.
However, this critical work also brings with it an increased risk of chronic stress and trauma, which science has shown to be key contributors to the development of substance use and mental health issues.
Bedrock Recovery Center’s Frontline program for veterans and first responders was developed and is run by medical professionals, mental health specialists, and peers in recovery who are attentive to the unique needs of these populations. Our highly qualified specialists provide all the tools and support necessary for lasting recovery from addiction and mental health issues like complex trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression.
Key Aspects Of The Frontline Pathway To Recovery Program
BRC’s Frontline program focuses on education, safety, and self-empowerment, key elements for long-term recovery from addiction and trauma.
These elements are delivered through a client-centered approach, because no two people—no matter how similar their backgrounds—experience substance use and mental health issues exactly the same way. Putting the client at the center of the treatment experience means that your specific needs and goals are considered every step of the way, shaping the care you receive.
Psychiatric Evaluation And Substance Use Assessment
Shortly after arriving at Bedrock, you will meet your care team and receive a psychiatric evaluation and substance use assessment. Through this discovery process, you and your care team will determine your treatment needs and recovery goals and then plan the steps necessary for meeting them. Your individualized treatment plan may include stabilization services for managing mental health or withdrawal symptoms, including medical detox, before entering the residential program.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Veterans and first responders have an elevated risk of developing a substance use disorder along with PTSD, or other co-occurring disorders. Compared to having just one of these disorders, having a dual diagnosis has historically resulted in increased functional impairment, higher morbidity and mortality, worse treatment outcomes, and increased rates of homelessness, incarceration, and suicide, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Treatment programs that offer an integrated dual disorder treatment (IDDT) model, or one that provides simultaneous treatment of addiction and mental health issues, are changing this. IDDT models like the one used by Bedrock are proven to deliver the best results, helping clients achieve and sustain recovery.
Multidisciplinary, Evidence-Based Care
Proven-effective treatment methods from a multidisciplinary care team are the backbone of our Frontline program. In some cases, these methods are proven to be beneficial for anyone with a substance use or mental health disorder, while in other cases, they may be especially beneficial for military veterans and first responders.
Evidence-based treatment options at Bedrock include:
- cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- exposure interventions
- psychoeducation
- family psychoeducation (FPE)
- cognitive processing therapy (CPT)
- acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- motivational interviewing (MI)
- pharmacotherapy
- medication management
Clients with alcohol or opioid addiction also have access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
Treatments are provided by skilled nurse practitioners, mental health specialists, peer support professionals, and other highly trained staff, all of whom have experience helping first responders and veterans in recovery, or are among this group themselves.
A Holistic Approach
Activities and therapies that support your overall health and well-being are another key aspect of the Frontline Pathway to Recovery program. Through our variety of wellness, social, and recreation opportunities, you can begin to make having fun a priority again, without the use of substances, while developing healthy coping skills, building a daily routine, and connecting with peers in recovery.
Holistic options in Bedrock’s Frontline program include:
- extended gym time
- fitness classes
- group meditation
- art, sound, music, movement, tapping, and other expressive therapies
- outdoor activities, such as the use of our spacious outdoor patio and pergola, basketball courts, ping-pong table, etc.

Additional services provided in our Frontline program include case management, peer support, and aftercare planning, including participation in our alumni program.
Case management services can be a critical component of treatment, helping connect clients with resources and other support during treatment. This may include help with keeping your job or preparing for employment, accessing educational opportunities, addressing legal concerns, etc.
Peer support is available in a variety of formats outside of group therapy, including meeting with a peer support professional, participating in a 12-step program, or attending various support groups.
Finally, your aftercare coordinator will make sure that the next steps in your recovery are set up before you leave us. We are proud to offer an alumni program as part of our continuing care support, to help keep you connected with mentors and peers and keep your success going strong.
