Rhode Island Alcohol and Drug Detox Rehab Centers

Like its fellow New England states, Rhode Island has struggled with drug addiction for some time. Proximity to major cities such as New York and Boston, and a relatively high unemployment rate have earned the Ocean State some unwanted top spots on national lists comparing drug abuse.

Startlingly, RI was the worst-ranked in the nation for illicit drug use in 2015. The percentage of teen drug users has been the highest in Rhode Island in recent years and the percentage of adult drug users has been in the Top 5. The state suffers from a high drug death rate, with overdose deaths increasing over the last three years.

Apart from long-standing problems with alcohol, marijuana, and opioids, RI has seen a rise in cocaine and stimulant use. Other issues in the state include a relatively low perception of risk linked to drug use. This sentiment prevails. There’s also evidence that kids in Rhode Island are more likely to encounter drugs on school property than in many other states.

Here’s what you should know about addiction and rehab centers in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island Alcohol & Drug Addiction Statistics

According to the 2017-2018 NSDUH report, an estimated 31% of Rhode Island residents between ages 18 to 25 used illicit drugs in the month before the study. Here are some other state stats from this national survey:

  • Around 17% of RI residents in the 18-25 demographic reported having a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year. This means that they regularly abused substances, either by taking illegal drugs or misusing legal drugs, or they had a dependence on them.
  • About 25,000 people living in the state who were over the age of 26 reported past-month illicit drug use that excluded cannabis. This refers to the use of meth or MDMA or any other outlawed substance.

Rhode Island Addiction Statistics for Alcohol

When contrasted with national estimates, RI has a higher rate of chronic liver disease and road fatalities linked to drinking.

In 2015, the CDC found that Rhode Island ranked third in the country for deaths due to alcohol poisoning. About 30% of these deaths took place as a result of alcoholism and the rest occurred due to binge drinking. White men between 35 and 64 accounted for the majority of cases.

In 2017, 251,000 people over 12 admitted to dangerous past-month binge drinking. This refers to when males drink five or more drinks within a few hours of each other. The benchmark drops to four for females because of a difference in alcohol metabolism.

In 2019, the percentage of females who drank excessively was higher than the national average.

Rhode Island Addiction Statistics for Marijuana

Unlike many of its Northeast neighbors, Rhode Island still prohibits the use of weed for recreation. But this didn’t stop about 43% of young adults between 18 and 25 from indulging in the substance over the previous year (2017).

Only 21% of 12 to 17-year-olds perceived great risk from doing the same, despite the harm marijuana poses to teen development. The liberal laws and attitudes toward weed in neighboring states has made an impact on local adolescent behavior. Indeed, the annual average for cannabis use in this age group has been higher than the national average in recent years.

Rhode Island Addiction Statistics for Opioids

Almost a decade ago, heroin was the most common primary drug listed in RI rehab treatment admissions. Not much has changed since then. Prescription opioid use continues to lead to increases in illegal drug use and Rhode Island has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic.

  • In 2017, a quarter of new HIV diagnoses amongst females were linked to intravenous drug use.
  • In 2018, there were 267 deaths linked to opioids and fentanyl has played a growing part in fatalities.
  • In 2017, there were 11.7 cases of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) for every 1,000 hospital births in the state.
  • That same year, around 36,000 locals over the age of 12 misused pain meds.

There have been some improvements where prescription opioids are concerned. The state now recognizes the drugs’ disastrous effects and issues fewer opioid prescriptions than a decade ago. And 43 prescriptions per 100 persons is lower than the average U.S. rate of 51.4 prescriptions.

Rhode Island Treatment Facts

  • During a single-day count in 2015, 4527 more people were in a Rhode Island rehab than on the same day four years before. Almost half of those enrolled in rehab facilities in RI had a combined substance use disorder (SUD) with issues with both alcohol and drugs.
  • About 34% of patients had a problem solely with drugs. On one day during that same year, 6214 patients were treated with methadone in Rhode Island Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services.
  • In 2017, 26,000 people struggling with addiction during the preceding year did not receive SUD treatment at a drug rehab in RI or elsewhere.

There’s growing recognition that treatment, not imprisonment, is the better route to take in response to the crisis and other addictions.

In 2017, there were about 48 rehab facilities in Rhode Island catering to 8,000 patients. In 2007, the numbers were about the same and this may explain why many people go untreated. The epidemic has led to an increase in people with SUDs, but the capacity to help them is not increasing at the same pace. This is a challenge throughout the country.

Still, there are many rehabs in Rhode Island and nearby states that can assist people with compassion and high-quality care. Let’s explore some of the questions you may have about Rhode Island rehab centers.

Rhode Island Alcohol Detox and Drug Rehab Questions

Where Should I Go to Receive the Best Alcohol and Drug Detox in Rhode Island?

If you have a serious opioid addiction, then finding rehabs in RI that offer medication-assisted treatment can mean the difference between life and death.

If you’re going to rehab solely for detox, then regardless of your primary drug, MAT will make withdrawal much more comfortable for you.

A good rule of thumb is to only consider rehab centers in Rhode Island that are accredited and operate with evidence-based treatment. EBT is supported by scientific studies and is proven to be effective in helping addicts along their recovery journeys.

Facilities that you’re considering should also offer treatment that is tailored to you. Rehab is not a one-size-fits-all service. The best treatment programs focus their treatment plans around this principle.

How Long Is Inpatient Detox in Rhode Island?

You can expect a detox to be anywhere from a few days to a week long. The length depends on a few factors and your drug of choice is one of them. Different drugs take different amounts of time to leave your body. You can feel residual withdrawal symptoms for months in some cases.

If you have a polydrug problem, then detox may take longer because it will be more complicated to manage withdrawal from the various substances your body has gotten used to.

Whatever you do, don’t attempt to detox outside of a medical setting. Many at-home detoxes end in relapse because nurses and doctors can’t attend to your discomfort. Detoxing without help can also be dangerous and even fatal in the case of alcohol, opioids and benzos.

What Should I Look for in a Detox Rehab Facility?

When choosing a detox in RI, it’s important to select a reputable facility that will monitor and provide medical support to you around the clock. Detox is not an easy part of the recovery process. You need qualified help and MAT that is customized to your specific needs.

Detoxing without subsequent treatment often doesn’t have a high success rate. For that reason, it’s worth looking at detox centers in RI that also offer other rehab services. This makes moving from the first step of rehab (physical detox) to the second step (therapy) more seamless.

Is Addiction Treatment Necessary for Recovery?

Addiction to alcohol and hard drugs is a serious disease. It’s difficult to fight a disease without the assistance of health experts. Treatment at a rehab in Rhode Island or beyond can stabilize you physically. And it can give you the mental tools to quit and avoid relapse.

Rehab can also link you to resources that get you back on your feet, and provide healthier ways to relieve stress and spend your time once you leave. With help, a brighter future can become a reality for you.

How to Choose a Drug Rehab Center?

Now, let’s go a little deeper into the aspects you should consider when choosing a rehab in RI.

Accreditation

If there’s one golden rule for selecting a rehab and detox in RI, it’s this one. If your RI residential or outpatient provider is accredited, it means you will receive evidence-based treatment (EBT) that complies with high standards.

Respected third party oversight bodies include:

  • The Joint Commission
  • National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers
  • Legitscript
  • Shatterproof

Evidence-Based Treatments

We’ve touched on EBT but it’s worth reinforcing its importance. Evidence-based practice uses recognized and sound treatment approaches. This applies to both medication protocols and counseling techniques.

When you’re considering rehabs, see if they offer some of the following therapy strategies:

Some of these modalities use vouchers and prizes as incentives. This is an effective approach for those struggling with highly addictive substances, such as opioids.

Customized Rehab Programs

A good rehab center will craft a treatment plan that is specific to you and your complex history. This plan will help your body and mind heal from their particular issues. It adapts therapy modes to consider your lifestyle factors. This way, you can sustain sobriety after you leave a controlled environment.

Medically Supervised Detox

Withdrawal symptoms can be unpredictable and potentially lethal depending on the drugs you take. Having a trained specialist on hand 24/7 to deal with adverse reactions such as seizures is crucial to making it through this vulnerable time.

Detox begins with a medical assessment. Physicians consider how long you’ve been using, what you’ve been using and how often you consume substances. They also look at your overall health and mental status.

Doses are gradually reduced to prevent any extreme effects. And you’re given compassionate care, medication and nutritional support to make the process much more bearable. Going cold turkey and receiving medically supervised detox is worlds apart. The latter can have a major impact on your recovery prospects.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Various kinds of trauma and mental health issues can cause addiction. And addiction can cause mental health issues. If you have a dependence on substances and a co-occuring mental disorder, you will receive a dual diagnosis. This requires integrated treatment that targets both problems.

Imagine a soldier with PTSD using opioids as a crutch. Treating PTSD is key to treating substance abuse.

Credentialed Treatment Professionals

Rehab involves sacrifices and expenses. Make sure your time and money are well-spent on licensed addiction professionals who know what they’re doing. Credentialed experts often have the experience and know-how to provide treatment that sticks and changes your life for the better. They can help you dodge curve balls and make your rehab experience a more positive one.

Research a facility’s personnel. They can be a massive influence on how you choose to move forward after treatment.

Continuum of Care

Rehab is not like laser eye surgery where you walk in with blurry vision and walk out with 20/20 eyesight. Addicts often have to deal with long-term cravings. A continuum of care can mitigate this, especially during the first few months after inpatient treatment when lapses are common.

This may mean that your rehab gives you access to outpatient treatment and aftercare services. Regular sessions with a well-versed addiction therapist can help you manage new stressors and refine your coping skills. You can analyze challenges to your sobriety and work through solutions to stay on track.

Family Programs

Your addiction affects the psyche of everyone that cares about you.  As a result, you are not the only one who needs mending. Family therapy can fix relationships damaged by an SUD. This is significant because having a social support structure can go a long way in helping you to abstain from using.

When you’re going through treatment and are relatively clear-headed, it’s much easier to see how dear your loved ones are to you, and why you need to stay sober. Family therapy also gives your family members tools to make recovery easier for you. You may even need to figure out how to deal with a family history of substance abuse.

Selection of Therapies and Treatments

People are different. The things that make us tick are just as different. If the facility you’re considering offers a wide array of therapies, it increases the odds that you’ll find an approach that works for you.

Finding a modality that aligns with your values is much more convenient than having to find another facility.

Types of Rehab Programs in Rhode Island

Detox Programs

There are some rehab centers in RI that offer just a detox. Here, you can receive all the support you require during the hectic physical phase of recovery. These rehabs are often linked to other facilities that offer the next stage of addiction treatment. Or they do much of the legwork in transitioning you to your choice of residential service provider.

Residential Inpatient Programs

Whether you’re considering an alcohol rehab in RI or a facility that treats all SUDs, severe addiction requires residential inpatient treatment. Here, a temptation-free living environment is combined with intensive psychotherapy sessions and some form of MAT if suitable. This is optimal for recovery after a detox.

Inpatient treatment can last from a month to a year. Over a longer period, you will have the chance to amend your habits and overhaul your lifestyle. And in addition to counselors and specialists, you will interact with peers who are going through the same thing as you, and have their own lessons to share.

Medication Assisted Programs

Facilities that offer medication assisted treatment may provide meds to ease withdrawal symptoms, stave off cravings, or to treat co-occurring conditions. MAT also refers to maintenance doses of opioids that can transform the lives of some opioid addicts.

Rhode Island Sober Living

Sober living homes are a great bridge between inpatient treatment and normal life. Temptations may abound outside of the residence, but within the house tenants abide by strict rules.

Your housemates are all in recovery too so, depending on the home, there may be group therapy sessions. It might be compulsory to go to a 12-step program or to do random drug tests and chores.

The hope is that this keeps you off drugs and allows you to establish a healthier routine. Living in a dry house can be really helpful as you work out other challenging aspects of independence such as finding work or going back to school.

Aftercare Programs in Rhode Island

Aftercare can mean formal outpatient or MAT sessions. Or it can mean going to free support groups regularly and finding a sponsor who can mentor you through trying times. If you slot a reminder of your goals and destructive past into your social and work life, it may help you to stay alert and retain a productive and hopeful mindset.

How to Use Your Insurance to Pay for Addiction Treatment

Don’t let rehab costs put you off seeking treatment. Insurance will pay for many accredited rehabs. Call your provider to check what they cover on your plan, and contact your rehab to see if they accept your insurance.

If you don’t have state-funded insurance you can reach out to an addiction hotline or someone in local government who can point you in the right direction.

The following insurance companies cover rehab in RI:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts
  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield Maine

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont

  • Cigna
