New York Alcohol and Drug Detox Rehab Centers

Like the rest of the Northeast, New York has a longstanding problem with drugs and alcohol that isn’t going anywhere yet.

Get Help Now!

Opioids are one of the biggest threats here, just like much of the rest of the country. In New York, 2,991 people died from drug overdoses that involved opioids, including heroin, fentanyl and prescription opioids (e.g. OxyContin, Vicodin, tramadol, etc.) in 2018.

That’s far from the only way New York is affected by drugs though.

The state also has a significant problem with:

  • alcohol
  • benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Valium, and Ativan
  • Sstimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamine

If you live in New York, then you should know that there’s a rich network of drug and alcohol treatment and rehab near you. There’s a strong emphasis on substance abuse treatment because of the prevalence of addiction locally.

Even if you don’t live in New York, getting out-of-state treatment can be a valuable chance to disconnect from the parts of your old life that aren’t serving you in recovery. A fresh start in a new state can reset your mind and allow you to reconnect with your motivation to live without drugs and alcohol.

New York Alcohol and Drug Addiction Statistics

In New York, there are a few agencies that report on drug and alcohol statistics each year.

They include:

  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
  • National Survey on Drug Use and Health
  • National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services

Drug Statistics in New York

Nearly half a million New Yorkers use cocaine, heroin and other hard drugs, and over a million have an alcohol use disorder.

In fact, 14% of all deaths in New York state were due to alcohol and drugsover the past 10 years.

More people die from drug and alcohol-related fatalities than car accidents in a 2009 report. In 2014, 7 out of 10 car crashes involved alcohol. In situations where the driver was drunk, 152 out of 163 drivers died from their injuriesin 2014.

Treatment Facts in New York

The substance abuse situation is dire in New York. Over 280,000 people sought substance abuse treatment at rehab centers in New York in 2014.

That’s only a fraction of the people who are actually affected by addiction. In fact, only 5% of people who need addiction treatment in New York receive it.

Possibly due to reasons like male gender roles and expectations, or biological differences, men seek treatment for addiction more often. In New York, 73% of people who enter addiction treatment are male and 26% are female.

New York Alcohol and Drug Detox and Rehab Questions

If you know that alcohol and drug detox is in your future, you probably have more than a few questions on your mind.

The more you know at the start of treatment, the better you can prepare to get the most out of rehab. We answered the most popular questions about drug and alcohol rehab in New York:

Where should I go to receive the best alcohol and drug detox in New York?

The best treatment center for you is one that anticipates and meets all of your needs so you can recover in safety and comfort.

You should pick a treatment center in New York that practices evidence-based treatment and offers customized treatment plans for each patient.

How long is inpatient detox in New York?

Detox is different for each person, and different drugs require different detox lengths. Still, most detox programs come in standard lengths that range from a few days to a week or longer.

The average program length of some common drug detoxes include:

  • Alcohol: 5 to 7 days
  • Benzodiazepines: 5 to 14 days
  • Opioids: 7 to 14 days
  • Stimulants: 2 to 4 weeks

What should I look for in a detox rehab facility?

When you’re shopping around for a rehab facility, you should look for a treatment center that offers both detox and inpatient programs for an easier transition between phases.

Ultimately, every patient has different needs. Your ideal treatment center won’t be the same as the next person’s, but you can consider the above factors to make the decision that’s right for you and your recovery.

Is addiction treatment necessary for recovery?

Everyone who wants to recover from addiction should get treatment. It’s much harder to recover from addiction alone than it is with treatment.

It may be hard to make the decision to go to treatment, but it’s a decision you won’t regret—because it will pay off in terms of long-term wellbeing and recovery.

Where to Find New York Addiction Treatment

You can find addiction treatment in New York by talking to your family doctor. They can provide you with a referral to help you get the process started. Your family doctor is already familiar with your health history and insurance coverage, which can streamline the referral process.

Instead of getting a referral, some people find treatment for addiction directly by:

  • browsing an addiction treatment directory
  • searching for addiction treatment centers in your state
  • contacting social and mental health support in your state
  • reaching out to an addiction hotline or helpline

How to Choose a Drug Rehab Center

Choosing a drug rehab center is a personal process that’s different for everyone.Your unique history determines the type of treatment that you’ll respond best to, and it’s important to pick a treatment center that offers what you need.

At the same time, there are many other factors that go into picking a drug rehab center, including:

  • accreditation
  • evidence-based treatment
  • customized rehab programs
  • medically-supervised detox
  • dual diagnosis treatment
  • credentialed treatment professionals
  • continuum of care
  • family programs

 Accreditation

Find out whether a potential treatment center choice is accredited. Accreditation is important because it shows that a treatment center and its programs are held to a high standard of care. An accredited program needs to go through an extensive evaluation on a regular basis.

There are many organizations that accredit treatment centers for substance abuse, but the two most well-known (and the two that accredit the most organizations) are:

  • Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF): CARF is a nonprofit that works with substance abuse and dual diagnosis programs. They accredit over 90 specific types of drug and mental health rehab programs. In all, over 25,000 programs in 3,000 treatment centers hold CARF accreditation.
  • Joint Commission (JCAHO): The Joint Commission is the country’s biggest accrediting agency that works with medical centers and hospitals, including addiction treatment programs. There are over 20,000 programs and providers that have Joint Commission accreditation.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Always choose treatment centers that offer evidence-based treatment. As the name suggests, that means treatment that has a body of scientific evidence that holds up to peer review and research. In other words, there’s evidence that it works.

Customized Rehab Programs

Choose a rehab center that creates a tailored treatment plan for every new patient.

Your treatment plan should take into account factors such as:

  • your mental and physical health history
  • your drug use history
  • your family health history
  • your home environment

Medically-Supervised Detox

Medical detox is a critical part of nearly every treatment plan. A medical detox program supports you through the earliest parts of recovery, when you’re the most vulnerable. Most relapses happen during withdrawal, but detox can prevent that.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Did you know that 9.2 million Americans experienced both mental illness and substance use disorders in 2018?

The term for that is dual diagnosis and it’s very common. In some cases, mental illness develops first and substance abuse comes later. In others, substance abuse comes first.

Either way, the end result is the same: you have two diagnoses that both affect each other and both need treatment.

Credentialed Treatment Professionals

The treatment center that you choose should list their mental healthcare professionals and their credentials openly.

Look for treatment centers that employ licensed, credentialed and experienced:

  • counselors and therapists
  • coaches
  • doctors, including psychologists and psychiatrists
  • nurses
  • social workers

Continuum of Care

Continuum of care refers to the full range of treatment that you need when you’re recovering from addiction. Your treatment plan should anticipate the full continuum of care by including each part of it and addressing it thoroughly.

Choose a program that mentions that they follow a continuum of care and you can be sure that the care team will manage this part for you. They can make recommendations and help you adhere to their treatment suggestions while answering any questions that you may have.

Family Programs

Addiction impacts you and the people you live around. At the same time, your family can impact the way you recover from addiction. Both of those are important reasons to choose a treatment center that has family programs.

Selection of Therapies and Treatments

Finally, choose a treatment center that offers a full range of evidence-based therapies and treatment for addiction and the co-occurring disorders that often accompany it.

This is important for two reasons:

  1. Addiction treatment is highly individual: There’s a wide range of available treatments for a reason. Addiction can present differently from person to person, and that means the way you respond to treatment can be different too. A big treatment selection ensures that there are plenty of potential options that could work for you.
  2. You can switch tactics without switching programs: If you don’t respond to the first intervention that your care team tries, they can help you find a better fit. The more therapy types are available in-house, the more likely that you can continue recovery without having to transfer to a new program.

Types of Rehab Programs in New York

There are 5 different types of programs that you can find for addiction treatment in New York, and you may want to take part in all of them. That’s because these programs are transitional and support each other at each step, starting with detox and ending with aftercare.

They include:

  • detox programs
  • residential inpatient programs
  • medication-assisted treatment programs
  • sober living programs
  • aftercare programs

Detox Program

The detox program is the first part of addiction treatment that most people experience. During detox, you’ll receive medical monitoring and management of your withdrawal symptomsuntil the withdrawal phase is over.

Your care during detox may include:

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • IV hydration
  • Medications
  • Nutritional support
  • Symptom management

The length of a detox program varies depending on the drug you’re discontinuing. In most cases, detox programs last 5 to 7 days. In some cases, they can last up to 2 weeks.

Residential Inpatient Program

The residential inpatient program gives you a safe and comfortable place to focus on recovery without the distractions of outside life.

After detox, you may find that you’re too vulnerable to go home and face your responsibilities and triggers yet. That’s normal, and it can be helpful to remove yourself from the situation by attending an immersive inpatient rehab program.

These programs use a combination of:

  • addiction education
  • behavioral therapy
  • medication

The recovery-focused setting can be helpful by putting your head in the right space to start over. You should choose a residential inpatient program that lasts 90 days or longer. Research shows that 90 days is the shortest effective program length, although longer is always better!

Medication-Assisted Program

For people who are recovering from alcohol or opioid addiction, medication-assisted treatment can help you overcome long-term cravings.

The most common medications for opioid addiction include:

  • Buprenorphine, which prevents withdrawal
  • Methadone, which blocks opioid effects and reduces cravings
  • Naltrexone, which blocks opioid effects

The most common medications for alcohol addiction include:

  • Acamprosate, which reduces cravings
  • Disulfiram, which causes negative effects when you drink alcohol and acts as a deterrent
  • Naltrexone, which blocks the effects of alcohol

New York Sober Living

For some people, the transition from inpatient treatment to living your old life again can be too jarring. If you’re not sure you can maintain your recovery while going to school, working and taking care of responsibilities, then a sober living program can provide a safe transitional stage.

The main premise of a sober living home is simple: everyone who takes part is drug-free and in recovery from addiction.

Aftercare Programs in New York

An aftercare program can be an important part of maintaining recovery for many people. These programs offer you structure within which you can build recovery skills and cope with your disorder.

Some components of an aftercare program may include:

  • 12 steps meeting participation
  • counseling or therapy
  • educational sessions
  • family therapy
  • mindfulness-based recovery skills, such as those learned in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • outpatient treatment
  • medication-assisted treatment

How to Use Your Insurance to Pay for Addiction Treatment

Most major insurance companies cover addiction treatment through employer-funded, self-pay or state-funded (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid) plans. The specifics for addiction treatment coverage will vary based on your exact plan.

The process should be the same for most companies, including:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Anthem
  • Cigna
  • Humana
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Aetna

The first step is to confirm insurance coverage by looking at your plan benefits listed in the Member’s Handbook (or similar) that you received at the start of your plan’s year. If you don’t have a physical copy, you can find it by logging in to your insurance plan online.

If you don’t have the handbook and don’t have access to it online, you can:

  • Ask your primary care physician’s office to confirm coverage: Your doctor’s office may be able to help by contacting your insurance company to find out about authorizing and covering addiction treatment. If your insurance requires a referral, this is the first step anyway.
  • Ask your treatment center of choice to confirm coverage: Some treatment centers have insurance and billing departments that specialize in reaching out to insurance companies to inquire about coverage. Calling a treatment center can be a quick way to verify whether you’re covered.
  • Ask your insurance company’s help line: Most insurance companies have a 24/7 line (sometimes a 9-5 line) available for inquiries about your plan and benefits. Learning about addiction treatment coverage is often a quick phone call away if you can’t find the information elsewhere.

If you’re hesitating to go to rehab because it still feels unknown or scary, don’t fret too much! We know that you have a lot of questions on your mind about what happens in rehab. We’ve done the research for you so you don’t have to wonder what to expect!

These are the most frequently asked questions about rehab in New York:

How long does rehab last?

The National Institute on Drug Abuse says that rehab should last 90 days or longer. In fact, rehab should last as long as possible. As a chronic condition, substance use disorder takes a lot of time to recover from, even in rehab.

Three months is the shortest rehab length that’s proven to work, but you should go to rehab for the longest period you can manage.

What can I bring to rehab?

Your treatment team will give you a list of items to bring to rehab (and items to avoid bringing). In general, they’ll encourage you to bring only what you need and not too much. That’s because you don’t want your rehab experience to be filled with distractions or reminders of home.

If there’s anything else that you’re wondering if you should bring, ask your program coordinator at the treatment center. They’ll be able to let you know the specific rules for your facility.

What is a day in rehab like?

A day in rehab can look very different from one program to the next! It’s hard to predict what a day of rehab will look like for you, but generally, expect days in rehab to be structured.

Your exact schedule will vary depending on your treatment plan and what’s offered in your program. But you should expect to stay busy for most of the day and for your days to follow the same routine day in and out.

What happens after rehab?

Just because you’re done with rehab doesn’t mean you’re done with addiction! After rehab comes aftercare.

Aftercare plans are individual and depend on your needs and recovery goals. Your treatment team will work with you to create an aftercare plan before you even leave rehab.
