In 2022 alone, nearly 108,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, according to finalized figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And countless thousands more continue to live with harmful, expensive, and limiting substance use disorders without getting the treatment that they need to recover.
If you are in this difficult situation, you should know that treatment is available to help you change your own life for the better. But not all addiction treatment services are the same.
Working with a high-quality residential rehab center in Massachusetts is one of the best ways to get started with your own recovery journey, with Joint Commission-accredited rehab centers being some of the very best available. Here’s why.
JCAHO Accredited Rehab Centers
What is accreditation, and how do treatment centers become accredited?
In a nutshell, accreditation is a seal of approval that an independent organization, like The Joint Commission, gives to a treatment center only if they can live up to specific high standards. Formerly known as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), The Joint Commission is the oldest and largest of these independent, non-profit organizations, and it provides JCAHO/Joint Commission accreditation for a variety of different healthcare providers, not only addiction treatment centers.
It’s important to note that accreditation is an optional, expensive, and difficult process, and there are many treatment centers that choose not to pursue accreditation with The Joint Commission (which has accredited about 19% of U.S. addiction treatment centers), the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (or CARF, which has accredited around 22% of facilities), or other accreditation bodies. Many others have attempted to secure accreditation at one point but have fallen short.
There are over 250 specific standards that The Joint Commission considers when a treatment center pursues accreditation. These standards cover a wide variety of different topics, with some of the most important being the following.
Patient Care And Treatment Performance
Is the treatment center providing the highest quality of care when compared to standardized performance measures? What are the center’s clinical outcomes, is the overall patient experience positive, and is the center following all current best practices?
Safety
Are measures in place to ensure the safety, health, and wellness of all patients receiving treatment? Is the environment secure and accessible, and are all medications administered safely? Is there enough staff on hand and are they trained and fully qualified to provide care?
Equity
Are patients treated fair and equitably in the course of their treatment, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other factors? Is the provider working to reduce disparities in health outcomes and improve patient satisfaction and trust among all groups who receive care?
Performance Improvement
Is the treatment center dedicated to the idea of always improving, always offering better care and staying current with the latest research, treatment methods, and best practices? Do staff participate in continuing education and training courses?
Making The Difference
The Joint Commission currently provides accreditation to over 22,000 healthcare organizations, and they all receive certain benefits as a result.
For example:
- improved patient care and safety, as the accreditation process itself identifies problems that can be corrected
- improvement over time, as continuous feedback keeps providers up-to-date as healthcare standards and practices change
- competitive benefits, as many patients and public organizations specifically choose to work only with accredited organizations
- reduced risk from errors or low-quality care, which may also reduce liability insurance costs
- improved staff recruitment and development, helping treatment centers to attract quality staff and maintain high standards

And it shows.
When you choose to work with BRC, you can trust that you or your loved one will receive personal attention in a safe, supportive, comfortable treatment environment. Treatment is provided by highly qualified, compassionate, and up-to-date healthcare experts who offer the leading evidence-based and holistic treatment services, whether that means medical detoxification, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), behavioral therapy, peer support groups, alternative treatment programming, and much more.
Treatment here also means joining a community of other people who have gone through the same treatment program and have overcome the same or similar obstacles along the way. With our long-term aftercare coordination, alumni events, and other ongoing care resources, you’ll be able to come out of treatment with help and support behind you whenever and wherever you need it.
